Robotic sea bream from the University of Kitakyushu

Tai-robot-kun’s creator, professor Ikuo Yamamoto, says the robot can easily be mass-produced, outfitted with various cameras and sensors, and released into the sea to perform a wide range of oceanographic survey tasks. He adds that because the robot swims silently and looks like a real fish, it would be able to gather data without alarming the creatures it encounters.

The engineers involved in the project say they are ready to mass-produce the robot, which is currently a unique piece. The fish was shown to the general public during an event on the university campus last week. A robotic manta ray is in development as well.

iBar is a system for the interactive design of any bar-counter. Integrated video-projectors can project any content on the milky bar-surface. The intelligent tracking system of iBar detects all objects touching the surface. This input is used to let the projected content interact dynamically with the movements on the counter. Objects can be illuminated at their position or virtual objects can be "touched" with the fingers.

High Tech Slalom Ski Training

A new motion capture system using a network of sensors to detect high speed movement can help skiers to improve their downhill slalom racing techniques

Sensors provide motion capture without the cameras

The precise twists and turns of a skier's body during a downhill run have been captured for the first time by fusing the data from a multitude of body-worn sensors. The information could help skiers hone their technique before important competitions.

Salary man Sims

Perhaps not entirely grasping the concept of escapism, Bandai, creator of the hugely successful Tamagotchi, is set to release Ant’s Life Studio in November – a virtual ant farm that requires its ‘owner’ to build nests, feed the queen and avoid getting eaten by hungry spiders.

The insects humdrum existence and work orientated lifestyle however is being aimed at Japan’s masses of stressed out salary men, a group whose equally humdrum office existence and company focused life appears to disturbingly mirror those of ants – virtual or real.

clipped from www.youtube.com

Not that Bandai seems deterred by such similarities, with a spokeswoman for the toy maker optimistically claiming, “Stressed-out employees can keep it on their work desks and be comforted just by watching the ants work. By watching them work, they can take their minds off their own work for a while.”

Japan's Eee PC killer now available in U.S.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- A week or two ago, a few gadget blogs covered the Japan-only mini PC called Kohjinsha SC. With built-in GPS, TV antenna and swivel-top tablet mode, the mini laptop is definitely desirable. All reports said it was Japan only. But now you can buy the English-language version in the U.S. for $1100.

The company sells this tiny powerhouse in Japan only. But the U.S. company Dynamism, which installs English-language software on Japanese gadgets and sells then in the U.S., is now offering the laptop for sale.

PokerMate table brings the touchscreen to Texas Hold 'Em

Ask any gambler — playing poker in a casino and online are two completely different things. At a real poker table you have the not-insignificant advantage of being able to observe your opponents, while nothing matches the speed and convenience of online play. This PokerMate table might just be the happy medium. Coming in 6-, 8-, or 10-seat versions, the PokerMate gives each player a touchscreen, taking the game virtual while keeping all the players gathered in one spot.
