G.E.’s Breakthrough Can Put 100 DVDs on a Disc
General Electric says it has achieved a breakthrough in digital storage technology that will allow standard-size discs to hold the equivalent of 100 DVDs.

GE unveils holographic disc breakthrough
The process works by imprinting chemical changes in the form of patterns –- holograms –- within the disc. Those holograms are then read by lasers, similar to the ones in Blu-ray players. In fact, at 500GB, these holographic discs could offer 20 times the capacity of a single-layer Blu-ray disc.

Hologram test: A prototype of GE’s holographic storage disc undergoes testing at GE Global Research, in Niskayuna, NY. The green lasers record a hologram; the red laser monitors its performance. The discs, which could eventually hold one terabyte of data, are the same size as current DVDs and CDs. Future players should be able to play all formats.
